WHAT IS UNIVERSAL DESIGN (UD)

The new flats will have wall tiles installed in the kitchen and wet areas such as bathrooms and back yard. The bathrooms will be fully fitted with sanitary wares such as wash basin with tap mixer, shower set and water closet suite.

All new HDB flats will have Universal Design features implemented in their development projects.

Universal Design is HDB initiative to create a user friendly environment to all users especially its ageing citizens since 2006. The concept of universal design is applied in three key areas:

Features of Universal Design at HDB precinct

The precinct will be designed with barrier-free pathway to seamlessly connect residential blocks, activities zones, transport nodes and pedestrian crossing. There will be ramps and link bridges allow easy negotiation of uneven levels from drop-off porch to multi-storey car parks. There will be designated handicapped parking lots and free seating areas to facilitate residents who have physical difficulties.

Universal Design in your housing block

The block design will feature more communal spaces and seats for the neighbours to bond. The lift buttons are designed with Braille markings along with contrasting colours for easier contrasting. There will be simple to understand pictograms to provide warnings and guidance to the residents. Easy-to-understand pictograms for clearer communications

Universal Design in your HDB flat

The internal corridors and doorways at EastGlen @ Canberra are designed wider to be wheelchair friendly and ramps are installed to facilitate uneven levels. Low height windows are installed to allow more natural light and ventilation in the HDB flats. Some other interesting considerations are lever taps and door handles, rocker switches and safer clothes drying system.
